Stored Product Pests

There are many types of stored product pests (also referred to as pantry pests); from beetles to borers, mealworms to mites, moths to weevils and mites, Paffy’s Pest Control has got your covered.

Types of Product Pests

Grain and flour beetles and weevils are the more common residential stored product pests. They can come into a home from a purchased flour or grain from a market or bulk food section. The larval stages of these insects look much more intimidating, as their body could look like a centipede or caterpillar; they still, however, only have six legs. Mealworms are also beetles, though they look more like worms in their larval state.

Almond and grain moths can be confused as a type of grain or almond. The grain moths lay the egg and grow into their larval stage inside a wheat kernel, for example. Most pantry pests are attracted to light and can fly. This can make for a disappointing and surprising discovery of these pests.

Imagine coming home from a weekend away, opening up your cupboards to find a snack before you make dinner, and out fly a couple flying beetles or moths. Your appetite gone and your lungs empty, you try to gather your thoughts to figure out where on earth these could have come from. You determine they were on some groceries you purchased before you left. What do you do?

Control for stored product pests is a multi-step process. Prevention is important. Inspect all incoming items for your pantry. Make sure your home and cupboards are in good physical condition and that there is adequate ventilation. Sanitation is also important. Clean items off as you put them in the cupboards for the first time. This will reduce any hidden pest infestations. For commercial properties that store products, make sure they are on pallets around 18” away from the wall.

It is important to keep stock on rotation, putting new items in the back and using up the older first. It is equally important to have a preventative service whether you own a home or a business, to reduce any possibility of future infestations. Paffy’s has many types of pest control proposals; from weekly to monthly services, semi-monthly to quarterly, you can find something that works best for your home or property.

Treatment for these pests whether for commercial or residential may be very similar given size of the area affected. Paffy’s has multiple tools at its disposal, from gel baits to residual encapsulated chemicals and glue boards, Paffy’s always gets the desired result of complete pest eradication.
