They are more common in the western states, but can also be found in nearly all of Canada, as well as the majority of the US. While these insects pose no threat, they can be quite a nuisance as they seek to enter any structure in hopes of over-wintering there.

Boxelder bugs are harmless to humans and plant life, and are distinctive in shape and color: dark bodies with a red or orange borders on their abdomen and wings. While they are harmless, they do secrete a staining color when exterminated, and in swarms can be difficult to take care of. It also adheres to the walls of the property, serving as a protective coating against those fall invaders. Once the treatment dries, which takes between one and two hours, any Asian Lady beetles, Boxelder bugs, hornets, or wasps that land on the siding will be dead within eight to 12 hours.
